Football Player

The Resume

    (March 19, 1938-May 8, 2023)
Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico
    Quarterback
Attended the University of California, Berkeley
Played for the Calgary Stampeders (1959-60), BC Lions (1961-66), Minnesota Vikings (1967-69), and Boston Patriots (1970)
Head coach of the University of California, Berkeley (1982-86)
General Manager of the BC Lions (1990)
Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame (1984) and the College Football Hall of Fame (2004)

Why he might be annoying:

He was drafted out of college by the Washington Redskins, but they never contacted him, so he signed with the CFL.
He was let go as California’s coach partly because he expressed his frustration at a blowout loss to Washington by unzipping his pants in front of the press. (‘It was bad enough to lose the game, but I had to lose the post-game interview, too.’)
As BC Lions GM, he had a tendency to sign NFL players that were past their prime, such as Mark Gastineau.
At a 2011 CFL alumni dinner, he came to blows with former Hamilton Tiger-Cat tackle Angelo Mosca over a hit Mosca had made in the 1963 Grey Cup. (Talk about holding a grudge.)

Why he might not be annoying:

He is the only quarterback to play in the Rose Bowl (1959), the Grey Cup (1963-64) and the Super Bowl (1970)
He tied the NFL record by throwing seven touchdown passes in a game (September 28, 1969).
He filed an antitrust suit against the NFL that resulted in a court ruling that the standard player contract was an unconstitutional restraint on trade (1974).
His first year as head coach, he was named Pacific 10 coach of the year.
As BC Lions GM, he signed quarterback Doug Flutie, who developed into a CFL star.
