The Resume

    (July 20, 1966- )
    Born in Atrocomulco, Mexico
Graduated from Panamerican University, with a law degree (1988)
Secretary of Administration for the State of Mexico (2000-2002)
Representative for the 13th District of the State of Mexico (2003-04)
Governor of the State of Mexico (Sept. 16, 2005–Sept. 16, 2011)
    President of Mexico (Dec. 1, 2012- )
Cancelled a diplomatic trip to the US over comments made by President Donald Trump related to the building of a Southern border wall and his demand that Mexico pay for its construction (Jan. 26, 2017)

Why he might be annoying:

He is notoriously gaffe prone (e.g. referencing a candidate by the name of 'Mrs. Hillary Trump').
He was accused of plagiarizing his law school thesis.
He cheated on his first wife constantly (whom he had three kids with).
He had two illegitimate children while married, one of whom died shortly after childbirth.
He started dating his second wife barely a year after his wife died from an epileptic attack (although the two first met during his 2005 campaign for Governor - draw your own conclusions).
His Presidential win was overshadowed by national protests, citing voting irregularities, as well criminal connections and money laundering within his own campaign.
His first term was marred by his mishandling of both the Iguala mass kidnapping and El Chapo's escape from Altiplano prison (in 2014 and 2015 respectively).
That, coupled with his indifference towards party corruption, contributed to historically low approval ratings, dropping to as low as 23% (an unpopularity rivaling even Donald Trump's.
A video of him mispronouncing a Mexican government agency's title went viral, prompting the PRI (known for tactics of censorship when in power) to lobby for the video to be pulled on copyright grounds.
He was forced to issue a public apology after his actress/singer wife purchased a $7 million home, dubbed 'Casa Blanca,' from a government contractor (2014).
His joint meeting with President Barack Obama and Canada President Justin Trudeau - labelled the 'Three Amigos Summit' - came off as awkward, culminating with a widely-parodied attempt at the 'three-way handshake' (Jun. 29, 2016).

Why he might not be annoying:

He is the eldest of four siblings.
He worked for a public notary in Mexico City, during his final years in college.
His election marked the return of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to power after a twelve-year hiatus.
In terms of looks, let's just say he has his share of groupies (most of them on the younger side).
His popularity abroad would seem to be greater than in his home country (a flattering Time Magazine cover and article focusing on his Presidency aroused national outrage).
He oversaw the opening oil fields for foreign investment for the first time in 75 years.
His administration has worked to scale back the violence of the Mexican Drug War ignited under the previous Felipe Calderon administration with counterinsurgency methods that have met with varying levels of success.
He took heavy criticism from Spanish-language media for hosting Donald Trump for a joint press conference during the 2016 Presidential race (for better or worse the coverage helped Trump immensely).
The outrage over some of his gaffes were overblown, usually centering on relatively minor issues (e.g. his not being able to name three of his favorite books, not being able to name the year of Benito Juarez's birth, etc).
