Why he might be annoying:

He was a child star on radio, starting at age six.
He did not get along with the other Dead End Kids.
He was married and divorced three times.
In the mid-1940s, with his first marriage collapsing and his career faltering, he began drinking heavily, had a nervous breakdown, and attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills.
He said, 'One morning in 1953, I woke up and didn't remember who or where I was. The next thing I knew, I was in a state hospital and had two series of shock treatments.'

Why he might not be annoying:

When he ad-libbed some lines in 'Angels with Dirty Faces,' James Cagney punched him in the nose.
He served in the Army Signal Corps and Special Services during World War II.
He quit drinking through Alcoholics Anonymous.
After acting roles dried up in the 1950s, he got a job as a salesman with the Leonard Appliance Company, and was named 'Most Creative Salesman in the U.S.' by the National Association of Manufacturers.
He became a registered nurse to help care for his third wife, who had multiple sclerosis.
