    Congressional Representative from Hawaii (1965-77,1990-2002)
    Founding member (1994) and Chair (1995-97) of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus
    President of Americans for Democratic Action (1980-82)

Why she might be annoying:

    She launched a campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination that resulted in her winning a single delegate (1972).
    She and Bella Abzug made a controversial trip to Paris to press for the resumption of peace talks, during which they met with the foreign minister from North Vietnam (1972).
    Opponents of her liberal views dubbed her 'Patsy Pink.'
    She ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Senator for Hawaii (1976), Governor of Hawaii (1986), and Mayor of Honolulu (1988).
    She was reelected to Congress two months after her death, forcing a special election to be held to fill her seat.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She won election as student body president (1944), despite anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II.
    She was valedictorian of her high school (1944).
    While attending the University of Nebraska, she organized a successful campaign to end racial segregation in the dormitories.
    She was the first Japanese-American woman licensed to practice law in Hawaii.
    When no established law firms were willing to hire her because she was married and had a child, she started her own firm with assistance from her father.
    She was the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress.
    She co-authored Title IX, prohibiting gender discrimination by institutions of higher learning that receive federal funds (1972).
    She was married to John F. Mink for 51 years.
