    Assistant coach for the men's basketball teams at Western Michigan University (1979-82) and the University of Michigan (1982-89)
    Assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings (1998-99)
    Head coach for the men's basketball teams at the University of Michigan (1989-97) and San Diego State University (1999-2017)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was fired by the University of Michigan after it was revealed he had a major role in the booster scandal.
    He was under investigation by the NCAA, after he arranged for Ed Martin, who was one of the school's boosters, to get complimentary tickets.
    His trips to the 1992 and 1993 NCAA National Championship games with Michigan were vacated as part of the sanctions against the program.
    Some Michigan supporters felt he got off scot free in contrast to the rest of the program.
    Had he not guided Michigan to the National Championship, he wouldn't have been considered for the head coaching job.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is the first interim head coach in NCAA basketball history to guide a team to a national championship.
    He guided Michigan to the school's first National Championship in men's basketball (1989).
    He turned a downtrodden San Diego State men's basketball program into a perennial contender.
    He had the support of many of his former players at Michigan, who felt he got a bad deal in light of the sanctions against the program.
    He was cleared of any wrongdoing by the NCAA, after it was revealed he wasn't involved in the booster scandal.
