Best known for portraying Lt. Col. Henry Blake in the film ‘MASH’ (1970)
Also appeared in the films ‘Petulia’ (1968), ‘Tunnel Vision’ (1976), ‘Heaven Can Wait’ (1978), ‘Foxes’ (1980), ‘Zapped!’ (1982) and ‘What About Bob?’ (1992)
Recurring roles in the TV series ‘Arnie’ (1970-72) and ‘The Brian Keith Show’ (1973-74)
Wrote the novels ‘Inga’ (1979), ‘The Silent Fifties’ (1995) and ‘Just Like a Movie’ (1996)

Why he might be annoying:

He considered himself a writer moonlighting as an actor.
He was typecast as stuffy, upper-class authority figures.
He was the voice of Morris the Cat in 70s TV commercials.
He died one day after TV’s Lt. Col. Henry Blake, McLean Stevenson.
Because of the timing, his family did not announce his death publicly for a week to keep his obituaries from being taken as garbled versions of Stevenson’s.

He served in Army counterintelligence in Japan in the 1950s.
He was a founding member of the Second City improv comedy troupe.
