Why he might be annoying:

As advertising manager for the American Tobacco Company, he pitched cigarettes to the public.
RCA, the owners of NBC, hired him to use his advertising experience to persuade the FCC to adopt RCA's system for color TV over CBS's superior system.
RCA's David Sarnoff kicked him upstairs to NBC Chairman of the Board (1956) because his programming ideas were too expensive.

Why he might not be annoying:

He introduced the idea of having the networks own programs and sell advertising time to multiple sponsors, which reduced the sponsors' ability to dictate content.
He created two of NBC's longest running programs, ‘Today' (1952) and ‘The Tonight Show' (1954).
A believer that television should educate as well as entertain, he required NBC shows to include at least one cultural reference per broadcast.
