He worked on a whaling ship as a young man.
While his first wife was dying of tuberculosis, he carried on with another woman.
He was gullible.
He believed in fairies, ghosts, and many other ridiculous supernatural notions.
He never questioned his second wife's claims that she was psychic.
When Harry Houdini exposed her as a fraud, Doyle never spoke to him again.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father was an alcoholic.
He was a medical doctor.
He outlived his first wife and one of his sons.
When World War I broke out, he tried to enlist, even though he was 55 years old.
He helped free two men imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit.
He created one of the most beloved fictional characters of all time.
