He strongly supported violence as a means to an end.
He helped launch the Reign of Terror, which put down any suspected opponents of the French Revolution.
He branded those who disagreed with him as 'traitors' and encouraged their executions.
Despite declaring himself a friend of the people, thousands of innocent civilians died because of his demands for blood.
He despised authoritarian rule, yet had gained nearly dictatorial powers by the end of his life.
His death made him a martyr for radical revolutionaries.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He fought against monarchy.
He suffered from a serious skin disease, spending most of his time in a bathtub to ease the pain.
