Why he might be annoying:

Haizlip?
He sounded like Charles Nelson Reilly.
When he referred to Bill Withers as having worked as 'a disposal engineer' at Weber Aircraft in Burbank, Withers interjected: 'Man, I wasn’t an engineer! I was an assembler! I don’t have any education at all, you know, other than the kind you get just walking around!'
He never lived up to his full potential after 'Soul!' went off the air (primarily because of his ailing health).

Why he might not be annoying:

He started out producing summer plays at Howard University.
He paved the way for everyone from Don Cornelius to Arsenio Hall to Oprah.
He produced shows in Europe and the Middle East, including plays by James Baldwin and Langston Hughes, as well as a concert tour by Marlene Dietrich.
He had a diverse array of guests on his show, including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni, Al Green and Stevie Wonder.
He interviewed Louis Farrakhan on his show over twenty years before Arsenio.
His show was snared by the Nixon Administration's war on Public Broadcasting, with budget cutbacks pushing it off the air.
He continued to promote African-American culture after his show ended.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in the 1980s, and then with a brain tumor.
