The Resume

    (July 12, 1935-June 1, 2017)
Born in Preston, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom
Portrayed Alec Gilroy in Coronation Street
With Les Dawson, portrayed housewives Ada Shufflebotham and Cissie Brathwaite
Named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama and charity (2006)

Why he might be annoying:

He considered quitting acting after receiving negative reviews for an early performance as Falstaff in 'Henry IV.'
He played four other characters on 'Coronation Street' before he was cast as Alec Gilroy.
He told an interviewer he stopped watching 'Coronation Street' because it 'lacked humor.'
He was noticeably pissed off when his vacation was interrupted for an appearance on 'This Is Your Life.' (Fortunately, he mellowed out and enjoyed the actual presentation.)

Why he might not be annoying:

After the bad Falstaff reviews, he was encouraged to continue by a fellow repertory company member, Ben Kingsley.
He began his partnership with Dawson when he was approached while eating lunch in the Yorkshire TV cafeteria and asked to fill in for a missing actor.
Even after leaving 'Coronation Street' for good, he and his onscreen wife, Julie Goodyear, stayed in touch, talking to each other on the phone two or three times each week.
He was a patron of the Willow Wood Hospice in greater Manchester for over twenty years.
