Beauty Contestant

The Resume

    (July 27, 1993- )
    Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
    Miss New York (2018)
    Miss America (2019)
Appeared in Ava DuVernay's docuseries 'Colin in Black and White' (2021)

Why she might be annoying:

She competed twice for Miss North Carolina without winning (2016-17).
Those losses made her hesitant about entering further pageants.
She represented New York in the Miss America pageant despite having lived in the state for barely a year.
During the Q&A portion of the pageant, she boasted about having 'New York grit.' (Did we mention she had only lived there for a year?)

Why she might not be annoying:

She donated stem cells when her father needed a transplant during his treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma (2015).
While earning her masters degree in music composition, she wrote a chamber opera, 'King Solomon.' (2015)
She founded a music club for students through Success Academy charter schools.
She moved to New York City after winning a fellowship from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (2017).
She told the New York Post, 'Even though I wasn't born in New York, I feel like I've always had grit. Moving to New York right after receiving my master's degree really solidified the grit that I have.'
Her win marked the first time that all four major US-based beauty titles -- Miss America, Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA -- were held by black women.
