    With Emeric Pressburger, produced and directed '49th Parallel' (1941), 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (1943), 'A Canterbury Tale' (1944), 'I Know Where I'm Going' (1945), 'A Matter of Life and Death' (1946), 'Black Narcissus' (1947) and 'The Red Shoes' (1948)
    Also directed 'The Edge of the World' (1937), 'The Thief of Baghdad' (1940) and 'Peeping Tom' (1960)

Why he might be annoying:

    His first marriage, to dancer Gloria Rouger, broke up in three weeks.
    His directing career began with 'quota quickies,' designed to satisfy requirements that British theaters screen a minimum number of British films.
    His thriller 'Peeping Tom' offended British critics with its sexual and violent images and largely killed his career.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He worked his way up from being a gofer.
    The British Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest British movies includes five directed by Powell.
    He influenced Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.
    The Edinburgh International Film Festival named its award for best new British film after him.
