    He provided $1 million to support California's Proposition 6, which would have banned public schools from hiring gay teachers (1978).
    He and his family were accused of insider trading and had to pay a $664,000 settlement with the SEC (1988).
    After a series of unsucccessful investments, the Carl's, Jr. board of directors forced him out as CEO (1993).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He parlayed a $326 investment in a hot dog cart into a chain of 1,000 restaurants and a personal fortune of $100 million.
    He was married to his wife Margaret for 66 years until her death.
    He said he was 'heartbroken' by Carl's recent risque marketing campaigns, including ads featuring Dennis Rodman, Hugh Hefner and Paris Hilton.
