Why he might be annoying:

During his first tour of America, he demanded more money from the promoters and canceled several concerts until they gave in.
He was married and divorced twice.
He drove away many of his students with his refusal to accept any musical interpretations but his own.
During a tour of Israel (1953), he controversially insisted on playing a sonata by accused Nazi sympathizer Richard Strauss.
In an example of musical overkill, RCA released his complete works as a 65-CD box set (1994).

Why he might not be annoying:

His performance at age 12 was so stunning, he prompted Fritz Kreisler to declare, 'We may as well break our fiddles across our knees.'
He headlined Carnegie Hall at age 17.
He performed at US Army camps and hospitals across Europe during World War II.
After experiencing the smog in Los Angeles, he had an electric car custom built, becoming the first owner of one on the West Coast.
During his Israeli tour, he was attacked outside his hotel and struck with a crowbar.
