Nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor for the film 'Round Midnight' (1986)

Why he might be annoying:

He served time for heroin possession (1955).
He had the habit of reciting the lyrics of each ballad before playing it.
He lived in exile in Europe for 15 years (1960-75).
His role in 'Round Midnight' -- an expatriate jazz musician with a substance abuse problem -- was not much of a stretch.

Why he might not be annoying:

His sax playing was noted for its large and spacious sound.
He was twice named 'Down Beat' magazine's Musician of the Year (1978,1980).
While living in Denmark, he became godfather to future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.
After the release of 'Round Midnight,' Coke considered casting him in one of their commercials but changed their minds after deciding his skin color was 'too white.'
