    Hosted the BBC2 series 'Moviedrome' (1988-94)
    Teaches screenwriting and film production at the University of Colorado, Boulder

Why he might be annoying:

    John Lydon complained that 'Sid and Nancy' was inaccurate: 'It was so off and ridiculous, it was absurd.'
    He never had a box office hit.
    He turned down offers to direct 'Three Amigos!' and 'RoboCop' to make 'Walker.'
    He got in trouble with the Writers Guild of America for working on a Hollywood studio project during a WGA strike (1988).
    He was the original choice to adapt 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' for the screen, but he was fired and replaced with Terry Gilliam after clashing with Hunter S. Thompson.
    He is a 9/11 'truther.'
    Because he and Universal Studios co-own the rights to 'Repo Man.' 'Repo Girl' is officially not a sequel.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He originally studied law at Oxford (where he was classmates with Tony Blair) before deciding to transfer and major in film studies.
    Several of his films have cult followings.
    He raised the money for the ultra-low-budget films 'Bill the Galactic Hero' and 'Tombstone Rashomon' through crowdfunding.
    He is a fan of spaghetti westerns and wrote a critical appreciation of the genre, '10,000 Ways to Die.' (2008)
    He is also a fan of Japanese Godzilla movies and narrated a documentary about the special effects in the films.
