The Resume

    (February 19, 1985- )
    Airs on BBC One
Created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland
Premise: a look at the lives of residents of Albert Square in East London

Why EastEnders might be annoying:

It was originally called 'East8' (after the postal code for Hackney) until casting agents began referring to the show as 'Estate.'
It has attracted repeated complaints over violent storylines, especially since it airs before the 'watershed' hours for adult-oriented programming.
A run of episodes set and shot in Ireland produced complaints over negative stereotyping of the Irish people (1997).
A storyline about the kidnapping of the newborn baby of Dawn Swann was scrapped because it was too similar to the real-life abduction of Madeleine McCann in Portugal (2007).
Budget cuts forced the producers to limit the number of speaking roles to a maximum of sixteen per episode (2009).
When the sets had to be revamped for high-definition broadcasting, the Queen Victoria pub was burned down in real life as well as in a storyline (2010).

Why EastEnders might not be annoying:

The kickoff of the UEFA semifinal between Liverpool and Barcelona was delayed fifteen minutes to avoid clashing with the EastEnders episode revealing 'Who shot Phil.' (1984)
The episode where Den Watts hands divorce papers to his wife Angie (December 25, 1986) remains the highest-rated episode of a soap in the UK.
A National AIDS Trust Survey found that teens got most of their information about HIV from the storyline of Mark Fowler's (Todd Carty) struggle with the disease (1999).
Erin Pizzey, the founder of the Chiswick Women's Aid domestic violence center, said that a storyline in which Little Mo Morgan was abused by her husband (2000) did more to raise awareness of violence against women than 25 years of her advocacy.
The opening credits -- a montage of aerial photos of London's East End -- was updated in 2000 to include the Milennium Dome.
It won a BAFTA for Best Drama (1997), followed by nine wins for Best Soap or Continuing Drama.
