The Resume

Why Monday Night Football might be annoying:

It opens with Hank Williams, Jr. wailing 'Are you ready for some footbaaaaaaaaaall!'
If that wasn't enough, the execs thought it would be grand to have Kid Rock update the theme song.
Contrary to popular belief, MNF did not start with the Cosell/Meredith/Gifford trio. Gifford replaced Keith Jackson after the first season.
Not realizing its racist undertones, Howard Cosell said of Washington Redskin Alvin Garrett, a black player, 'look at that little monkey, run.'
It steadily went downhill after Cosell and Meredith left the show.
It gave jobs to O.J. Simpson and Joe Namath.
They made an ill-fated attempt at higher ratings by hiring Dennis Miller.
ABC had to set up a web site that explained Miller's obscure references on the show.
It ran skits featuring characters from other ABC shows.
Despite 36 years on ABC, the network decided to shift it to its sister station ESPN.
Joe Theismann suffered a horrific leg injury at the hands of Lawrence Taylor during a MNF game that ended his career. Ironically, he would become a commentator on the show twenty years later.
Al Michaels was caught on air saying 'no shit' when he thought his microphone was turned off.
It suffered the wrath of numerous rabid moms when they showed a racy skit featuring Terrell Owens and Nicolette Sheridan.

Why Monday Night Football might not be annoying:

It is the second longest-running American prime time program, after '60 Minutes.'
The NFL implemented a Monday night game especially for this.
It spun off restaurants and bars offering special deals on Monday nights while televising the game.
It separated itself from other sports programs in that people viewed to listen what the commentators (especially Cosell) would say next.
The show created and/or popularized sports innovations such as instant replay and the 'color man' position.
Many guest stars appeared such as Bill Clinton, John Lennon and Kermit the Frog.
Through MNF and Cosell, millions of Americans found out about Lennon's death (December 8, 1980).
A TV movie, 'Monday Night Mayhem,' was based on it.
