He was divorced four times.
He married Elizabeth Ashley twice.
He was a heavy smoker.
He had a drinking problem.
He demanded to have lots of privacy.
He got typecast into military roles.
On Johnny Carson's 'Tonight Show' he made some disparaging remarks about fellow guest composer Paul Williams diminutive height. Paul Williams rose to his feet and challenged him to a fist fight.

Why he might not be annoying:

He quit smoking in 1992 after a tumor was removed from his lung.
He stopped drinking in 1978 and spend much of his last years helping alcoholics and related charities.
When his father died, he took time off and completed the construction of 15 houses that his father did not finish.
He studied acting at the Actors' Studio.
