    She was the nominee for Lt. Governor on the Democrats' losing gubernatorial ticket in New Mexico (2014).
    She sparked criticism from some fellow Native Americans after supporting Elizabeth Warren (who famously claimed Native American heritage).

    She states she is a 35th generation New Mexican.
    She was a single mother on food stamps who worked hard and eventually rose to political prominence.
    She earned her law degree from the University of New Mexico.
    Along with Sharice Davids, she became the first Native American woman elected to serve in the United States House of Representatives.
