    He fell in love at first sight with a woman, Yvonne de Quievrecourt (1905).
    He engaged in stalkerish behavior (hanging around her house, following her to church) until Yvonne told him she was engaged to another man.
    He twice failed the entrance exams for college.
    Jacques Riviere, his brother-in-law and a fellow author, accused him of being 'over-sensitive and sentimental.'
    Shortly before his death, the patrol he was part of may have violated the rules of war by deliberately firing on a German ambulance.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He taught French to T.S. Eliot.
    He managed to get a classic novel out of his romantic obsession.
    <25013>John Fowles called 'Le Grand Meaulnes' 'the greatest novel of adolescence in European literature.'
    In Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road,' 'Le Grand Meaulnes' is mentioned as the only book Sal Paradise carries with him during his travels.
