The Resume

    (March 31, 1921-February 5, 2011)
    Born in Los Angeles, California
    Birth name was Margaret Rea
Acted in 'Strange Bedfellows,' 'Love Field,' 'Made in America,' 'Devil in a Blue Dress,' 'Cold Turkey,' and 'In Country'
Best known as Lulu Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard
Also portrayed Rose Burton in The Waltons (1978-81)
Later appeared as Brett Butler's (ex) mother-in-law on Grace Under Fire (1995-98)
Also guest-starred on episodes of 'Bonanza,' 'Gunsmoke,' 'Ironside,' 'Hunter,' 'Marcus Welby,' 'Burke's Law,' and 'MacGyver'

Why she might be annoying:

She could have passed as Conchata Ferrell's mother.
She was obese to the point where she didn't so much walk as she did 'waddle.'
She was typecast in maternal roles, usually lower class, loud 'trailer park' mothers.
She was dropped as an assistant to Kay Thompson in 1948, for, among other things, repeatedly disappearing to see Broadway shows, at crucial times without telling Thompson.
She was added to the lineup of the last two seasons of The Waltons to fill the void left by the departure of Michael Learned, Ellen Corby, Will Geer and Ralph Waite.
By that point, the show had already 'jumped the shark' so much that it was beyond saving and her addition didn't do much to help (the show died a quiet death shortly thereafter).
She and Patrika Darbo were quickly phased out after the first season of Step by Step (possibly because no one in their right mind was willing to believe that those two could be Suzanne Somers' mother and sister, respectively).

Why she might not be annoying:

She had a sense of humor about her weight.
She is a fan favorite among 'Dukes of Hazard' enthusiasts.
She gave off a sugar sweet, grandmotherly vibe.
She started out as a secretary to Arthur Freed at MGM.
She remained good friends with Kay Thompson's family years after being dismissed.
She would have been perfect to portray Cousin Nettie in a production of 'Carousel.'
She played a supporting role alongside Anthony Quinn in a 1949 National Road Company production of 'Streetcar Named Desire.'
She made several appearances on I Love Lucy as a member of Lucy and Ethel's 'Women's Club' meetings.
She had several memorable guest appearances on All in the Family as Archie's cousin Bertha (and a separate role as a lonely widow who finds love with Archie's friend Barney).
She was in good company considering that over half the cast of Step by Step was washed out by the last season (and dealing with Patrick Duffy couldn't have been a picnic...)
