His career was overshadowed by his addictions to cocaine and alcohol.
He was suspended by Major League Baseball seven times.
In 1992, he became the first player to be banned for life by Major League Baseball, due to substance abuse.

Why he might not be annoying:

In 1980, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year.
In that year, he set the record for most saves by a rookie (17).
He successfully appealed the aforementioned lifetime ban in 1992, and saved 15 games for the New York Yankees in 1994.
