    She divorced her husband but called herself a ‘widow’ to avoid the stigma.
    Rumors persist that she divorced him after discovering that he had a common-law wife and two children living in the Philippines, although it has never been proven.
    She insisted on keeping her married last name and asserted that her husband had died soon after they married.
    Her campaign for a House seat was harmed after it was revealed that her ex-husband was still living and that they had legally separated.
    She was defeated by Democrat John Morrow in the general election, and by a wide margin of over ten points.

    Her father was killed by white ranchers in a dispute over her family’s land.
    She was one of New Mexico's first female government officials.
    She promoted the use of the Spanish language in the suffrage fight to reach Hispanic women.

    She worked to preserve cultural practices in schools among the state’s Hispanic and Native American communities.
    She is the first Hispanic-American to be featured on US currency.
