Artist

The Resume

    (October 28, 1909-April 28, 1992)
    Raised in Dublin and London
    Famous for his surrealist paintings

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a slob.
    He drank a lot.
His paintings are full of horror, blood and disgusting imagery.
He said he wanted his art to 'leave a trail of human presence, as the snail leaves its slime.'
He destroyed many of his early paintings in a fit of temper.
    He was cynical.
He believed life was meaningless, and said if he hadn't been an artist he would have been a criminal.
He said in an interview that he was sexually attracted to his father.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was unpretentious.
Although a millionaire, he hung out in seedy working-class pubs.
His parents had him horsewhipped as a child in the hopes of 'toughening him up.'
They kicked him out when they learned he was gay.
Some consider him the greatest British painter of the 20th Century.
