The Resume

    (circa 600 BC-December 21, 2012)
    Born in Mexico
Calculates starting date to be August 11, 3114 B.C.E.
Tzolk'in is the Maya Sacred 260 day calendar (13 months of 20 days)
Haab' is the solar calendar 365 days (18 months of 20 days and 5 extra days)
Tzolk'in and Haab' coincided in a 52 year cycle
Still used in parts of Guatemala and Oaxaca, Mexico

Why Mayan Calendar might be annoying:

People believe December 21, 2012 is doomsday.
The Mayans simultaneously used the Haab' and Tzolk'in so the dual date would mark the year. This cycle would repeat every 18,980 days (52 years).
Dates used the names of two gods - one was a month with a god name and the other was a day number with a god name.
The 5 extra days of Haab' were considered evil, people would barricade themselves in their homes.
The Haab' was exactly 365 days, and thus, would loose a day out of sync every 4 years.
Every 52 years, the Mayans were forced to pray that there would be a new cycle.
Mayans considered Venus a good omen to start a war, so they obsessed on calculating Venus' position.
Mayans believed that certain day configurations had lucky or unlucky significance (similar to Friday the 13th).

Why Mayan Calendar might not be annoying:

They were meticulous for keeping the calendar accurate.
They obsessed on accounting for past, present and future, and thus, employed a number of different methods/cycles to maintain the accuracy of the calendar.
Scholars who researched the calendar state that December 21, 2012 never signified doomsday. It is merely the end marker of one cycle signaling the next 26,000 year cycle.
On December 21, 2012, the world goes from the age of Pisces to the age of Aquarius.
The calendar is based on astronomical observations of the Moon and Venus.
Pyramids or Monuments were erected when a long calendar cycle ended.
It is theorized that Tzolk'in may have something to do with harvesting or the term of pregnancy.
The first day of each month was numbered 0.
