A singing cowboy named Woodward Maurice? (no wonder he changed his name)
Most of his movies were B-Western schlock.
His wife co-starred in several of those movies.
Many of his movie characters were variations of 'Tex' (Tex Rand, Tex Martin, Tex Houston, Tex Yancy, Tex Haines, etc.)
He ran in Tennessee for the Republican nomination of the U.S. Senate in 1970, and was soundly beaten.

Why he might not be annoying:

His nickname was America's Most Beloved Cowboy.
He had 14 Billboard Country chart Top 10 hits, including three #1s and three #2s.
'You Two-Timed Me Once Too Often' was Billboard's #1 country hit of 1945.
He was the 5th inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the first singing cowboy to be so honored.
He earned a lifetime membership in the Grand Ole Opry, and at one time his wife Dorothy was its official greeter.
His son Thomas was born with cerebral palsy, and he and his other son raised money and public awareness to help others with the affliction.
In 1980, he was posthumously inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his efforts in the recording industry.
