He ran away from home at a young age.
He did not like sunlight, forcing Green Day to only play indoors.
When he left Green Day, the band almost broke up.
Tre Cool is considered a better drummer than Al.
He got into an accident and was found by a sign that said 'El Sobrante' and thought that his name was 'Al Sobrante.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He helped Green Day earn respect amongst the punk rock crowd.
He left Green Day to go to college.
He was in an unexplained accident and lost some of his memory.
That accident caused him to forget his own name.
He saw the name 'Kiffmeyer' on a mail box and began to get his memory back.
There are rumors that he still plays in underground punk rocks bands in Berkeley.
