Birth name was Patrick Lafcadio Hearn
Also known in Japan as Koizumi Yakumo
Reporter for the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, Cincinnati Commercial, New Orleans Times Democrat, Harper's Weekly and Scribner's
Taught English literature at Tokyo Imperial University (1896-1904)
Best known for his collections of Japanese legends

Why he might be annoying:

His right eye bulged from the socket.
As a reporter, he was known for lurid crime stories, in which he described sticking his finger in a dead man's brain and drinking blood from an abattoir.
His newspaper stints usually ended via a falling out with his editor amid a torrent of abusive letters.
He may have been a bigamist, since there is no record of him getting a divorce from his American wife before marrying a Japanese woman.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was two and living in Dublin, his mother returned to Greece and he never saw her again.
During his teens, he was struck in the face while playing a game, leaving him blind in his left eye.
He was fired from one newspaper job in Cincinnati for marrying a black woman.
A Japanese publisher said, 'Lafcadio Hearn is about as Japanese as haiku.'
