Why she might be annoying:

She was a self-described 'Jewish princess' growing up.
She originally planned to be an actress and moved into journalism only to earn enough to pay for her four-times-a-week visits to a psychiatrist.
During her brief marriage to Arthur Herzig III, she liked to introduce herself as 'the fourth Mrs. Arthur Herzig the Third.' ('He didn't appreciate it.')

She about criticism that she described the exact combination of drugs her mother used to commit suicide in 'Last Wish,' 'The concern seems to be that some young, depressed person is going to get hold of the book and kill himself. Well, that young depressed person can figure out how to kill himself anyway.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was twice diagnosed with breast cancer, and had to undergo a mastectomy each time (1975, 1984).
'First You Cry' was known for its irreverent style at a time when frank talk about cancer was rare.
She noted that her publisher had forbidden her from using the words 'breast' or 'cancer' in the book title.
She was portrayed by Mary Tyler Moore in the TV movie of 'First You Cry' and by Patty Duke in the TV movie of 'Last Wish.'
At the time of her suicide, her mother had inoperable ovarian cancer that left her in constant pain, unable to eat, and unable to control her bowels.
