The Resume

    (June 18, 1882-July 2, 1949)
    Born in Kovachevtsi, Bulgaria
Headed the Communist International (Comintern; 1935-43)
    Prime Minister of Bulgaria (1945-47)

Why he might be annoying:

He secured his position as head of the Bulgarian Communist Party by leading a failed uprising that resulted in the deaths of 5,000 Communists and their supporters (1923).
He was part of Stalin's inner circle during the great purges.
As head of the Comintern, he encouraged Communists to ally with other left-wing parties to form a 'common front' against fascism -- until Stalin and Hitler signed a non-aggression pact, when he did a 180 overnight (1939).
After his death, his body was embalmed and put on display. After the fall of Communism, his remains were buried (1992) and the mausoleum where he had been displayed was torn down (1999).

Why he might not be annoying:

He went to work as a printer at age 12, and was a union organizer at age 16.
He was imprisoned without trial for two years for campaigning against Bulgarian participation in World War I.
He and two other Bulgarian Communists were arrested by the Nazis on spurious charges of having helped Marinus van der Lubbe set the Reichstag fire (1933).
He conducted his own defense so eloquently that in addition to securing an acquittal, he inspired a saying in Europe, 'There is only one brave man in Germany, and he is a Bulgarian.'
His sudden deterioration and death while in a sanitorium near Moscow led to suspicions that he had been poisoned on Stalin's orders.
