Why he might be annoying:

In grade school, the music teacher expelled him from the school band because he was ‘slowing down the other students.’
While playing with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the 60s, he would smoke pot, snort cocaine, and drink four or five bottles of wine a day.
He said he never listens to his records after he finishes making them.
He hates being identified as a ‘smooth jazz’ musician.

Why he might not be annoying:

He contracted polio as a child and began playing sax on a doctor’s advice to strengthen his chest muscles and improve his breathing.
He sat in with blues musicians Albert King and Little Milton when he was fourteen.
As a sideman, he played with James Brown, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton – just for starters.
