Founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen

First Headliners: Beck and Rage Against the Machine
Headlining artists have included Madonna, Jay-Z, Portishead, and Paul McCartney

Why Coachella might be annoying:

Its first (two-day) festival failed to make back its costs.
It was held just months after the disastrous Woodstock ’99.
Its first outing was so bad that organizers took a year off and then brought the festival back as an only one-day event in April 2001.
The change in month was also in part an effort to avoid high temperatures in the desert heat.
First-time attendees require an entire survival guide to make it through the three days.
It didn't have a rapper as a headliner until 2010.
They didn't have a black woman entertainer headline their festival until 2018.
Some people have claimed that 'too much corporate sponsorship' killed its vibe.
Organizers angered some attendees by eliminating single-day tickets in favor of full three-day festival passes (2010).
Madonna delivered a very visibly non-consensual kiss onto Drake during his headlining set - prompting the singer to wipe his mouth in disgust and the incident getting dubbed Kiss-Gate on social media (2015).

Why Coachella might not be annoying:

    One word: Beychella.
It is one of the largest, most famous, and most profitable music festivals in the US and the world.
It is considered a trendsetter in music and fashion.
Katy Perry said 'The lineup always introduces the best of the year for the rest of the year.'
It is a showcase for visual - often interactive - arts, including installation art and sculpture.
Organizers began permitting spectators to camp on the grounds in 2003.
Tupac appeared in hologram form to perform alongside headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg (2012).
It is a cross between Lollapalooza (only held in the desert) and Woodstock (more commercial).
High-profile reunions are also a fixture of the festival (Pavement, Faith No More, NSYNC, The Specials, Destiny's Child, just to name a few).
Its origins are rooted in a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster.
It was not held in either 2020 and 2021 due to travel restrictions and ban of public gatherings in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is referenced at the end of Black Panther ('When you said you would take me to California for the first time, I thought you meant Coachella or Disneyland.')
