U.S. Senator
    (September 28, 1957- )
    Born in Highland Park, Illinois
Member of the Louisiana Senate (2006-09)
Represented Louisiana’s 6th District in the US House of Representatives (2009-15)
Senator from Louisiana (assumed office January 3, 2015)
One of seven Republican Senators who voted to convict Donald Trump at his second impeachment trial (February 13, 2021)
Before 2001, he had been a Democrat, and contributed to the campaign of Mary Landrieu, who he would run against for his Senate seat.
He sent a letter to his constituents falsely claiming that Obamacare ‘allows a presidentially handpicked 'Health Choices Commissioner' to determine what coverage and treatments are available to you.’
During an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ he said any health care legislation that he supported would have to pass the ‘Jimmy Kimmel test’: ‘Would a child born with congenital heart disease [like Kimmel’s son, Billy] be able to get everything he or she would need in that first year of life?.’ He and Lindsey Graham then cosponsored a bill to repeal Obamacare that would allow states to eliminate requirements to cover children with pre-existing conditions… such as congenital heart disease.
He voted that Trump’s impeachment trial would be unconstitutional because he was out of office (January 26, 2021), then reversed himself two weeks later (February 9, 2021).
In an even more dramatic 180, he initially mocked the impeachment as a Soviet-style ‘show trial,’ then ended up voting to convict Trump.
He is a gastroenterologist who specialized in liver disease.
He was a founder of the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic to provide free health care to low-income families.
After Hurricane Katrina (2005), he led a group of health care workers in converting an abandoned K-Mart into an emergency health care facility.
He refused to pursue budget earmarks (federal money directed to specific projects, usually in a congressman’s district).
As a campaigner, he thrived in one-on-one meetings with constituents, with one reporter writing, ‘His approach to voters resembles the way a good doctor handles patients, with a gentle, but informed, bedside manner.’
