Best known as the voice of the HAL 9000 computer in '2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)'
Acted in 'Sleeper (1973)' and '2010 (1984)'

Why he might be annoying:

Despite being an accomplished stage actor, in movies he only could get work doing voice-overs.
He returned for '2010,' the weak sequel to '2001.'
Some sci-fi geeks hate him because, when recording the '2001' dialogue, he reportedly ad-libbed that the HAL computer was created in 1992, when it actually was 1997 in the book.
When Apple made a '2001'-themed ad for Super Bowl 2000, they didn't ask him to do the voice of HAL.

Why he might not be annoying:

He comes from Winnipeg, and presumably had to endure many cold winters while growing up.
He is a critically acclaimed Shakespearean.
His performance as the insane HAL is all the more frightening for being quiet, pleasant and well-spoken.
Some critics say HAL is the most believable character in the movie.
He won the part over the successful character actor Martin Balsam.
He spoofed HAL in Woody Allen's comedy 'Sleeper.'
