Co-wrote 'Principia Mathematica' with Alfred North Whitehead
Won the Noble Prize for Literature (1950)

Why he might be annoying:

He smoked a pipe.
He was married three times and probably cheated on all of his wives.
In 'Marriage and Morals' he describes how he went out on a bike ride with his first wife. When the trip began he still loved her, but halfway through he decided that he no longer loved her, turned around and rode home without saying a word to her.
He admitted that he was unsure of whether he was an atheist or an agnostic.
He wrote some mediocre fiction.
'A History of Western Philosophy' was written quickly and contained several significant misinterpretations that were never fixed.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the third Earl of Russell
Although he was a short man and not particularly good looking, he seduced many women.
He was opposed to having monogamy forced upon people.
By the time that he was 21 he had already written three books (One in math, one in philosophy, and one in politics).
Together he and Whitehead discovered modern day symbolic logic.
He unsuccessfully ran for Parliament in 1907, 1922, 1923 in an effort to grant women suffrage.
He was imprisoned during World War I for being a pacifist.
He made significant contributions to every area of philosophy (Metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, etc.)
In 1955, he and Albert Einstein co-authored 'The Russell-Einstein Manifesto.'
He was a social reformer and argued for sexual liberation and equality of the sexes.
While he was in his 90's he was a strong opponent of nuclear proliferation and the Vietnam War, and was arrested for protesting both.
