    Before moving to New York City to pursue acting, he was an industrial chemist, rising to regional manager of a company owned by Arkansas Governor Winthrop Rockefeller.

    He produced a Broadway musical, 'The Amen Corner' (1983), based on James Baldwin's play of the same name.
    He served on the board of People in Progress, a Los Angeles charity assisting homeless mothers in finding housing and employment.
    He underwent gastric bypass surgery (2005) and lost 150 pounds in a year.
