Appeared on Broadway in 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' (1941) and 'Little Darling' (1942)

Why she might be annoying:

She majored in pre-med at UCLA for a year before dropping out and joining the Pasadena Playhouse.
She said, 'I was what you'd call a 'pillow red.' I became a communist because I fell in love with a man [actor Lloyd Gough] who was a red and had joined the army to take care of the fascists, and I knew it would please him if I became one.'
She ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor of New York on the America Labor Party ticket (1954).

Why she might not be annoying:

Director Clarence Brown hired her to read lines with actors auditioning to star opposite Greta Garbo, then decided she was good enough that he got her a contract with MGM.
She was blacklisted after appearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee and taking the fifth.
Late in her life, she was frequently interviewed for documentaries about the stars she acted with, such as Garbo and John Barrymore.
