The Resume

    (September 26, 1912-February 11, 2018)
    Born in Morgan City, Louisiana
    Middle name was Joseph
    Guitarist and arranger
Famous for his collaborations with Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye
    Conducted the Rene Hall Orchestra
    Recorded 'Twitchy' and 'Night Fright'

Why he might be annoying:

    He smoked.
He shares a name with the Nurse Rita actress from Scrubs.
He is sometimes alleged to have performed the guitar solo on Ritchie Valens' La Bamba but he only performed the riff on a Danelectro six-string bass guitar.
He's more famous as an arranger for other, more successful, artists than he is for any of his own recordings.

Why he might not be annoying:

He first worked as an arranger for Earl 'Fatha' Hines.
Working as a talent scout for King Records, he discovered acts like Billy Ward and The Dominoes.
Although without any solo hits, he did perform with Ernie Fields on a Big Band cover of 'In The Mood,' which reached #4 on the Billboard 100 for 1959.
He arranged Ike & Tina Turner's 1963 album Don't Play Me Cheap as well as for The Impressions.
He played bass guitar on Cher's 1965 debut album, 'All I Really Want to Do.'
He arranged some of Sam Cooke's best-known recordings - most famously 'A Change is Gonna Come,' enhancing it with the ethereal strings, kettledrum, and the overarching French horn (thereby making the original also the definitive recording to boot).
He played guitar on Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On' and did a lot of work for Bobby Womack.
He's widely considered one of the early pioneers in Rock 'n Roll.
