Why he might be annoying:

He added ‘De’ to his surname to make it sound classier.
He took part in a revolt against James II and had to go into hiding.
He was a terrible businessman and ended up several thousand pounds in debt.
He sometimes used the bizarre pen name ‘Heliostrapolis, secretary to the Emperor of the Moon.’
He opposed Scottish independence and wrote, ‘A Scottish rabble is the worst of its kind.’

Why he might not be annoying:

As a child he survived the plague and the Great Fire of London (and later wrote about both).
He was a respected and feared journalist who wrote on a huge range of subjects.
He was popular with the public, who threw flowers at him when he was put in the pillory.
His realistic fiction helped lay the foundations of the modern novel.
‘Robinson Crusoe’ began a trend for castaway stories that has lasted to this day.
