Why he might be annoying:

He was a late bloomer as an actor, getting his first roles in his 40s.
He portrayed Ivan Dixon's father in 'Nothing But a Man,' despite being only eight years older.
In an ill-fated attempt at method acting, he drank a pint of 'some of the worst rotgut I could get' before he was supposed to film a drunk scene in 'Nothing But a Man.' The producer and director sent him home to sober up.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a US Army medic during World War II.
His height and deep voice gave him a commanding presence.
He was a member of New York City's distinguished theatrical workshop, the Negro Ensemble Company.
When director Guy Hamilton asked him what kind of weapon his character in 'Live and Let Die' should have, he replied, 'Why don't you give me something unusual, like a hook?'
