It is extremely isolated from the rest of the province, as it is only accessible by air, train or boat.
Its economy went into decline, following the collapse of the fur trade.
It has a subarctic climate, which makes it prone to having extremely harsh winters.
It was nearly considered a testing ground for nuclear weapons by the British government in the 1950's.
It has extremely rough terrain, due to its location in the Canadian Shield.

Why Churchill, Manitoba might not be annoying:

It is a multi-lingual community as the majority of the signs are in both English and Inuktitut.
It is considered one of the best spots in the world to see the aurora borealis (northern lights).
It was home to the Churchill Rocket Research Range, which was a testing ground for rocket launches by both Canadian and American armed forces.
It capitalized on the polar bear population near the community by offering tours to people who were interested in seeing them.
In addition to the polar bear tourism, it is also home to a substantial beluga whale population due to its location along the Hudson Bay.
