The Resume

    (1948-June 2, 2001)
    Born in Sarasota, Florida
First person in the United States to get legal marijuana for glaucoma
Won a landmark D.C. Superior court case for medical Marijuana usage in 1976
Founded the Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics (1981)
Book is 'Marijuana Rx: The Patients Fight for Medical Pot'

Why he might be annoying:

He smoked a joint on air with Larry King during his Live interview, generating a national stir (September 1988).
His wife claimed he smoked up to ten federally supplied joints a day.
He claimed he never got high from the government-supplied marijuana, further calling it 'consistently bad [and] very metallic. It lacks the fine, almost perfumed taste of street marijuana.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was told by doctors after his glaucoma diagnosis (at age 25) that he would be blind within five years.
He was arrested and prosecuted for growing medical marijuana in his backyard.
He underwent tests to prove no other drug brought his eyesight to a safe range (the argument won his case).
He was the first legal medical marijuana smoker in the United States since 1937.
The government repeatedly tried to cut off his access to the drug - he sued each time for reinstatement and won.
He made allies across the political spectrum, including Newt Gingrich and Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger.
He was active in efforts to get AIDS patients access to federally funded health programs.
He was as critical of politicians who used the issue as a political football as he was of those who who sought to combine social use of the drug with its medicinal use.
