He had a thick German accent and wheezing delivery.
He was born rich.
He performed bizarre, existentialist monologues in avant-garde clubs.
He was gloomy and complained a lot.
He said: 'The best thing is not to be born. But who is as lucky as that?'
Asked about Jerry Lewis' popularity, he commented: 'A pig performing to pigs gets the applause of the pigs.'
When an audience didn't get his jokes, he would scream: 'I should have known better than to sell roses in a fish market!'
