Why Gander, Newfoundland might be annoying:

The town was originally built directly around the airport; after it converted from military to civilian use following WWII, buildings were moved a safe distance from the runways and the original settlement was abandoned.
The airport and city both declined in importance once commercial airliners were able to fly the New York City to London route without refueling stops.
It was the site of Canada's deadliest air disaster, when Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 256 people, mostly US servicemen returning from the Middle East (December 12, 1985).

Why Gander, Newfoundland might not be annoying:

It was nicknamed 'Crossroads of the World' when trans-Atlantic flights regularly refueled at its airport.
Most of its streets are named after famous aviators.
Its air traffic control center monitors an average of 1300 flights per day in the Western half of the North Atlantic, whether or not the flights are landing at Gander.
After the 9/11 attacks, 42 planes with 6600 passengers and crew were diverted to Gander.
The hospitality and generosity of the locals was one of the more widely reported 'feel good' stories in the aftermath of the attacks.
On the one-year anniversary of 9/11, Prime Minister Jean Chretien traveled here and said, 'You did yourselves proud and you did Canada proud.'
