Namesake for the country of Columbia and the cities District of Columbia and Columbus Ohio.

Why he might be annoying:

He was looking for a route to India by going west and bumped into America.
In his four trips to 'The New World' he never stepped foot on what is today's U.S.A. or even the North America mainland.
He hoodwinked the friendly Native Americans (Indians).
He was thought of as a failure because he never found a western route to India and never brought promised treasure back.
He brought tobacco to Europe.
He tricked the Indians into thinking he had super powers by predicting the February 29, 1504 eclipse.
He did not prove the Earth was round (it was already known).
He miscalculated the circumference of the Earth, thinking it was only ¼ of what it really was.
According to Ripley's Believe It or Not he is listed with 26 different years of birth, 30 different birth places and eight different years of death.

He began European colonization of the New World.
He brought horses to the new world.
He brought corn and potatoes to Europe.
