    Previously served as Minister of Higher Education (2009-12) and First Vice President (2013-18)

Why he might be annoying:

    He comes across as a colorless bureaucrat.
    CNN noted that he 'exudes neither Fidel's charisma nor Raul's authority.'
    Since he was basically handpicked as a successor by Raul, most political observers expect he will make few significant changes towards either democracy or capitalism.

Why he might not be annoying:

    As the top official in Villa Clara Province, he rejected a government-issued car, preferring to tour the province on bicycle.
    He was considered an early supporter of LGBT rights in Cuba, allowing the country's first gay night club to remain open.
    He has called for greater internet access for Cubans.
    As President, he adopted a labor code banning discrimination on the basis of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability.
