Her full name is Alicia Ernestina de la Caridad del Cobre Martínez Hoya.
She grew up well-to-do.
At just 16, she married another dancer, Fernando Alonso.
Her affiliation with Castro led to her accomplishments being almost forgotten in the States.
Why she might not be annoying
Her performances in 'Giselle' and 'Carmen' are legendary.
Diagnosed with a detached retina at 21, three surgeries left her partially blind, with no peripheral vision.
She compensated for her visual impairment by using specially-colored stage lights as a marker and training dance partners to stand where she needed them on stage.
She performed into her 70s, still conveying her signature power and sensuality.
