    Psychologist
    Director of the Laboratory of Physiological Psychology at the Sorbonne (1894-1911)
    Designed the first practical IQ test
    Wrote 'Experimental Studies of Intelligence' (1903)
    Co-founder of the journal L'Annee Psychologique (Psychological Annual)

Why he might be annoying:

    He had a degree in law and never formally studied psychology.
    He first interests in psychology were 'animal magnetism' (hypnosis) and palm reading.
    He was an introverted loner.
    He coined the term 'erotic fetishism' for a sexual interest in objects, such as articles of clothing.
    His IQ tests were put to invidious uses by eugenicists and racists.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His theories on child development, based on his observations of his two daughters, influenced Jean Piaget.
    He developed the IQ test for the limited purpose of determining which underperforming students had learning disabilities.
    He successfully lobbied the French government to establish special classes for students with learning disabilities.
    His IQ test has remained popular with some modifications as the Stanford-Binet test.
    The journal 'Science 84' picked his intelligence test as one of the 20th century's most significant developments or discoveries (1984).
